Jason,
I don't know if it is available in Mesa, but Earthlink has a new service called "extended DSL" that does not have the distance restrictions that DSL has. They contract with Covad for that service, so it is also available directly from Covad. When I looked at it, the Earthlink pricing was better than the Covad pricing. It is not available, however, in every telco CO, so you'd have to contact Earthlink to find out (it was not available where I wanted it). My recollection of the pricing is that it is way above DSL but much less than a T1 ($350 for 384/384, $450 for 768/768, and $550 for a full bi-directional T1? I think it was around there). http://www.earthlink.net/biz/broadband/extend/
I am using Starband two-way satellite service at one location, and while it works very well, I would not recommend that to anyone who has any viable alternatives: the throughput for downloads isn't bad (500-600Kb), but the latency for interactive operations is horrible (i.e., web site browsing). It is still far better than dialup, though, especially since the fastest dialup I've ever gotten at that location is 22K, and the telco repairman told me that was way above average and to stop complaining.... ah, the joys of life in the country...
Best regards,
Dan.

My site is back up after taking a dive thanks to my baby boy...
I used to have the machine locked inside a protective case.
However, now that we've moved its out in the open in the house we moved out
from. I'm still waiting for high speed internet service to be brought to our
new home. Needless to say, everyone in the family has moved but me... I
still spend most of my time at the old house where I still have internet.
I've got a little time before the house sells...
We went to the edge of town where it's a little more rural. I didn't expect
that there would be no DSL service there. I was disappointed quite a bit.
Now I'm looking at installing a T1 line. But, that's mucho $$$ and I'd
prefer to avoid that if possible.
Is there anyone who has a recommendation about where I could host my
firebird database and my custom-built port 80 web-server-app? So far it's
pretty light duty.
Thanks,
Jason Wharton
