Personally I just store a file name and save the images in
their own directory ( actually the same pictures as the
intranet uses ). This works well and does not have any size
restrictions. All the our autocad drawings are then
available as well without having to do anything fancy.

Duplicating information on remote machines only needs to
copy the file when it is called for which is another
advantage, but I think it is a lot easier to manage a
directory of files rather than calling them up from the
database.
