I do not think this is possible, certainly not in the short term.
Could be time to consider an alternative approach to the user
interface.

I almost never let the users edit via a grid. I use grids for display
purposes only. For example I put a simple grid down the left hand
side of the form to show the list of records and then provide detail
display and edit fields for the currently selected record on the right
hand side of the form. Just a suggestion.
