well, I have tracked it down to T_IB_Connection.API_Database_Info,
called after a successful connection by
TIB_Connection.SysUpdateCharacteristics (the rest of the call stack is
TIB_Connection.GetCharacteristics, TIB_Transaction.API_Start,
TIB_Transaction.SysStart... I could go on if needed).

Is a 4k buffer still enough for isc_database_info?
