I am switched to output only plain text messages, and have the eMails
from egroups switched to plain text only.

As a result, HTML that is trying to slip through appears as

Give me 5 bit RTTY any day, you could transmit half a page of text in
minutes. Seriously, while colour coding of bits could be nice, at the
end of the day we just want the words.
