This really sounds like you don't have the server-machine alias entered into
your hosts-file.

Give your machine an alias and enter this alias into your hosts-file. For
naked 9x machines search for hosts.sam (ple) rename it to not have an
extension and enter the IP and alias into it. Now, your dial-up thing should
be gone....Under NT these things shouldn't be a problem as long as you got
an DNS-server running somewhere in your network....
