When I checked it out awhile ago, it appeared to me that quick desk copied
most of their ideas from marathon.

Quick Desk was the original one. That's for sure.

The controversial part: the programmer moved to a new company and carried
the code with him, so IB Expert was born in record time, according to Quick
Desk people.
