If you're using a POP3 service, I can suggest using
K9 - http://keir.net/k9.html - a free program that
acts as a proxy and uses a Bayesian filter method
in order to catch spam.

The more you qualify as SPAM, the better it gets.

It catches 99.8% of my spam messages - so I
avoid deleting over 50 spam msgs per day... :-)
