First question ... which version of Firebird?

I would start by creating an alias for c:/System Database/SysDatabase.FBD in
aliases.conf although I can understand if the windows apps can't use that.

Have you tried using the ip address of 'backofficepc' in the connection string?
All this sounds very reminiscent of problems I've had in the past :)
If using the ip address works, then add an entry in the hosts file on the W2k
machines ( c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts )

I've still got W2k running on two of the backup machines here and they are
running fine, but getting other machines to pick them up gets broken at times.
Running flamerobin on the problem machine often gives different errors which
help track a problem.
