According to the Interbase 6.0 Operations Guide (available from
http://www.firebirdsql.org/en/reference-manuals/ )

"On UNIX, EDIT calls the text editor specified by either the VISUAL
environment variable or EDITOR, in that order. If neither variable is
defined, then EDIT uses the vi editor."

I am not sure if that is still valid for Firebird, but I assume it is.
