I did some crazy things and now the right DLLs seem to be in the right directories:

Logged in as administrator, opened a command window as administrator - without this I got no answer from "instclient query", just the dialog asking me if I really want to do what I want to do.

First installed the 32bit client, using the instclient.exe from firebird_2_5\wow64, then the 64bit client, using the instclient.exe from the firebird bin directory.

Net result of all this: fbclient.dll 64 bit in system32, fbclient.dll 32 bit in syswow64 - but I can't install fdb. Always the same error message. Will ask in the firebird-python group.

Thank you for trying this,
Sibylle
