Thankyou to all those who responded to my question. You comments where very helpful!
I have now successfully moved form Firebird 2.1 32 bit to Firebird 2.5 64 bit.
I did restore the database as few people suggested. I haven't had a chance to test all the databases yet. I have had a look at the most complex ones and it does appear that all procedures, tables and views appear to be fine.
