Subject Occasional unexplained Slow down
Author Maya Opperman
Hi,

I have a site that experiences occasional unexplained slow downs.

Running a backup/restore into a new FDB file makes no significant improvement.

When it's slow, both the CPU usage and memory look OK.

I wouldn't say it's running a sweep, as CPU usage is low, and a freshly restored database is still slow.

I wouldn't say it's a stuck transaction, as a restore doesn't help.

The server is dedicated to our application, and they swear there is nothing running a scan, that would account for the hard drive being the bottleneck.

I am guessing it might be something to do with their network card.

They have an HP Gigabit Server Adapter network card on their server, but some of their clients still only have 100 base network cards.

Running a report, which just executes one large query, that returns many rows, seems to be fine. It's the opening of a screen that executes 5-10 queries to get various information from various places that seems to be the main problem. (changing the program to a single query isn't really viable)

They are using Firebird classic FB 2.1.5 (and have been on 2.1.3 and 2.1.4 with the same issue)

They are using Windows 2008 server.

Any ideas as to what else I can look at?

Is there any more info I need to provide to get help?

Thanks
Maya
