You have received brilliant help, but there still is something to add... I saw developers hardcoding a local path to the database into their application *shiver*.
If that or a number of other code malformations is the case with your software, you will probably indeed need to run it on each "thick" client having his own de-centralized database server, or switch to a remote desktop server system.
This, indeed, cannot be done using Windows XP. All the other things your IT staff told you is pure nonsense. I have to deal with such "experts" all day and you would be surprised how funny explanations suddenly come up when what really is happening is that the IT staff does not WANT to support your software.
"It would be good to run as Web-App..." ... really... I heard IT "Experts" demanding that from CAD software as well...
The next request will be that it runs on IPhone4 and Android...
In addition to what Helen and others recommended, ask the vendor/producer of your 2 software packages whether they have designed the software to be run in a client/server mode (database backend on one server, applications on thick/thin clients).
If the answer is "yes", your hardware will most likely be suitable to be used the way you imagine, _IF_ it also can handle a big number of big files when they should be created (music files _CAN_ be quite big, can't they?)
