I can see the lock files within the tmp/firebird directory so permissions are OK. Im also running tmps as you suggested before. Ive tried a while back with no webserver - still the same.

In the logs I now see
"Operating system call pthread_create failed. Error code 12 "
whereas I used to get (before swapping from SuperServer)
"Allocated 1002 page buffers of 2048 requested"

So im thinking that specifically could be related to SuperClassic.
also once or twice a week a couple of service terminations

"/opt/firebird/bin/fbguard: /opt/firebird/bin/fb_smp_server terminated abnormally (-1) "

From what you are saying 2.1 SS might be a good choice but it means recreating all of my existing dbs with the new file structure.
