The Windows registry key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Firebird Project\Firebird Server\Instances

has an entry called DefaultInstance. As soon as you rename or delete
that your messages will start reappearing in all versions.

I just rename the key so it'll remind me of what to do once I install a
new version of Firebird, which will restore the DefaultInstance entry.
