Firebird 1.0.3 was created long before Windows Vista saw the light of day. Who knows what kind of compatibility problems are lurking there. You might want to consider either upgrading your Firebird server, or downgrade to a different OS.

BTW: Depending on the exact Windows Vista variant, it is more thorough in backing up changed datafiles. Depending on the settings it might even shadow certain files.

Try connecting to 127.0.0.1 or the actual host IPv4-address instead of localhost. Also consider turning of IPv6 and check if that makes a difference.
