In the case of a sudden power loss, an abnormal Windows shutdown or a
freeze-up, you risk database corruption. Mind you, on Linux too you
should leave forced writes on under most circumstances.

It would be interesting to know if your SQL Server runs in async mode.
That would explain the performance difference, but it would also mean
that SQL Server is run in an insecure manner here.
