I assume you are using Linux: this error is a 'bad file number' error and usually indicates that 1) the socket was not opened, or 2) the socket was already closed before attempting a read or write. This could indicate that the other side has dropped the connection (eg killing of a program, bad network connection, bad NIC in client or server etc).
