Hi Herta,
changed lately to comply to FHS, seems to be broken. I've got the same problems
here. Neither superserver nor classic does currently work with Gentoo's ebuild.
In the meantime just use the official release, not the Gentoo ebuild.
See the comment that gentoo's ebuild emits:
* Firebird is no longer installed in /opt. Binaries are in
* /usr/bin. The core, udfs, etc are in /usr/share/firebird. Logs
* are in /var/log/firebird, and lock files in /var/run/firebird
* Please report any problems or issues to bugs.gentoo.org.
