Nothing new in portage at the moment. "Killall fbserver" gratefully
noted, I didn't know that's acceptable now. If that startup script
gets some attention, perhaps it might even give correct answers and
not say "the firebird service could not be started", even if it
could (see the message from Matthias Hanft in this thread).
