No, via Firebird, of course :-)
I can connect to the server by any other means, otherwise I wouldn't
have posted this issue to the firebird-list.
And yes, the server is Ubuntu Linux.

No, the same error message is generated by any program that connects from
a windows machine to the firebird server.
