I just got an idea and it may be worth it. Maybe the client computer is
on a network where it get the IP adress and DNS info via DHCP server.
After some time the DHCP lease expires and causes the problem.

Do you use HOSTNAME:/path/to/database or IP_ADDRESS:/path/to/database in
your connection string?

If you use Hostname, is it written to the hosts file directly (on
Windows client machine) or is it retrieved via DNS server?

When things don't work, can you ping the Firebird server machine using
the hostname?
