Thanks for the feedback.

We had tried building from official firebird source but failed -
something to do with gcc versions and other libraries.

However, we just did an "apt-get source firebird2...", and built
successfully from that. We have been thrashing it since lunchtime and
somehow this own-rolled version is working fine. I wasn't expecting that.

I can't see why it would be any different to the binary Ubuntu
download. But such is life.

We will continue to stress test it over the weekend and keep our
fingers crossed...
