Thanks for the info - actually, we've kicked, bought, and driven the
Firebird database in our product line and have been very happy with it

OK, if he's tire kicking, he should know that Firebird does a two-stage
index lookup. The first stage goes through the index, noting record
numbers of qualifying rows. The second stage reads the qualifying rows
in storage order.
