Which Server Hardware , CPU ,RAM ,Disks
how are disks attached pata sata scsi how many rpms
Which Server OS

Have you checked / optimized the Queries Already
Are you mainly inserting data into the Database , or ist it mainly
retrieving data


how timecritical are your queries as to returned results ,
could you use replication of the database
in order to run it simultaneously on multiple servers
