...not to mention that the project leader uses the mentioned Slackware
12.0 on his desktop workstation as main operating system ;)

Anyway, to all who might be interested, the problem was probably in
the fact that Linux version of IBPP library we're using doesn't
support run-time loading of fbclient yet. The binary for last release
was linked against 1.5 fbclient - so if you tried it with a clean
FB2.0 installation it would not start. This is the reason why we
recommend that Linux users build FR from sources.
