Since this is an off the shelf product the maintenance and upgarde are always automatic so it's less of a problem (it is already done with the current setup of flat files). There are also single customer installations, so it is only a matter of doing the upgarde 500 times (almost....).
However there is no doubt single database approach will be easier to code and maintain.

The question is whether if the database becomes very large, will using 500 databases instead of one improve performance? Does the size of the database have any substantial effect on performance?
