Doing direct database connections over the internet is never recommended on
any database - databases are big, and you don't want massive amounts of data
being pumped around over laggy links.
There should always be an application layer doing the grunt work for you -
unless you're replicating, and you want to move every single record...

Sure, it's possible, but just because you can, doesn't mean you should...
