I experienced such errors years ago. It was caused by FW off and
power failure. Are you sure that you have FW on? Show us results of
gstat -h.
In order to be safe on Win98 you should:

1) Have ForcedWrites On for sure (IB6 has it Off by default).
2) Have UPS.
3) Disable OS write cache.

I also would suggest to upgrade to FB1 at least..
