Here's an idea
Turn off firebird (killall fb_inet_server and friends), and temporarily
comment out the line in xinetd/inetd, and reboot/restart/reload
xinetd/inetd - basically stop it coming back temporarily
If you've got apache running on your box, configure it to run on port 3050
(in http.conf)
...
Listen 80
Listen 3050
...
and restart apache.
Then, point a browser at http://localhost:3050/ (don't forget to put in the
http at the front, as we're specifying a non-standard port.)
If apache answers, firewalling is ok, and inetd/xinetd or firebird is not ok
If apache doesn't answer, firewalling / tcp wrappers / hosts.deny is to
blame
The fact that you're getting a 'Connection refused' when telnetting 3050
says FC4 is stomping on this connection, and Firebird never gets to see the
attempt.
Nige.

Since I last wrote regarding my access to the 3050 service I have created
another Fedora Core4 install and am experiencing the same issues... this
rules out anything to do with a previous version of Firebird 1.02.
I am still experiencing the same telnet localhost 3050 connection refused
error.
Any ideas?

I have disabled the core firewall altogether as the server is an interanal
IP.
I'm going to try installing under VMWare on another machine and get to the
bottom of what's going on. btw, I didnt find any uninstall scripts on my
fedora core box.

Before you do, and if your machine ISN'T connected to any public networks,
turn off all firewalling completely...allow all data from anywhere, and
try
again.
Otherwise, reinstalling the OS will simply result in exactly what you have
now -
When telnetting, I get:
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
if you type "g <enter>" twice, it should show each letter 'g', and then
disconnect you.
If not, then you need to open a hole in your firewall for 3050 access.
