If you're starting over, and your company allows you to, try FreeBSD.

To do remove Firebird:
`pkg_delete firebird-server`

To open up a hole in the firewall for Firebird:
`ipfw add allow tcp from any to me 3050`

jobs become so easy with the right tools.
