Thanks. We were able to free up some time and configured it the same. Now only SSH traffic is allowed through the software firewall.
We'll probably get fancier and allow most traffic from the same subnet (the server room) to go through without using SSH, once we start seeing any sort of performance impact.
Of course, this will necessitate relocating the Windows servers to a different subnet or hardening them. Or both :-)

Rick , openssh installed on same server as firebird, with putty as a client (tunnel).
Openssh does not require special config (as it is on the same machine) .
The client (putty) must have a tunnel config´ed . The tunnel must have the host name as in $HOSTNAME ,like L13050:MyServer:3050 . I then open connection on localhost port 13050 . That should work. If you are using ssh as a client on linux, the same applies.
Every tool i used works (flamerobin, ibexpert, sqlhammer) and odbc connections too.
