We recomend (at work) ubuntu server (amd64) for all clients
Yes and one client installed ubuntu server on it's own on 6
opterons servers. (the only problem was burning the iso on win2k!)

You have to prepare yourself to install firebird (2.x) from source
code, you can contact firebird developers if you get any problems.
