was anyone else using the database at the time you added the column, if so
there could be rows in the table that your transaction could not see,
therefore could not update, so remained with null in the column

I know it is NULL for two reasons. First, a backup/restore fails with a data
validation error on that very column,
because it contains NULL which isn't allowed. Secondly, when doing the query
"Select * from MyTable Where BBLShare Is
Null", it actually returns records.

I DID add this to an already populated table, followed by an "Update MyTable
set BBLShare = 0". There is nothing that
justifies a NULL in this column.
