Good, this is more of what I was looking for. But would it be possible to by
pass this limitation? By design I'm using MS DAO tech, and would not be
connecting to the DB for long periods of time (hopefully). Could firebird
handle this?

You cannot always get an exclusive access lock to a file across network
nodes. It's not reliable.
So it's by design.
