Hi again,

Thanks for taking the trouble to find this info' for me.

I have got the connection to Firebird worked out, both via ODBC and Java. I
can run queries, filter data, browse data etc etc without problem. I can
even enter data so long as the PK is not an auto increment field. The one
problem left with getting the two programs to work seamlessly is the auto
increment. Open Office has two optional fields to retrieve generated values.
One for Auto-increment statement, and one for Query of generated values.
I've tried AUTO etc etc and nothing seems to work. What I find "annoying" is
the way the Open Office developers have put it down to the drivers and not
the program. Am I off the mark to say if one program - Access 97 - works
with the same driver, then presumably the problem must be with the way Open
Office talks to Firebird?

Anyway, before rant mode sets in, does anybody have any idea what I could
enter in the two boxes I mentioned above. OR, alternatively, could you
recommend an alternative frontend I could use with Firebird. (All this
started because, for reasons I cannot fathom, Access 97 crashes my XP SP2
set up if I run it for more than 5 minutes at a time.

Thanks again for bothering to reply.

Rob Davis

Rob, I seem to recall that some time ago OO started to use Java as its
'scripting language' (I only know because the decision created some
controversy). So I did a quick google, and there are several
references to OO and connecting to dbs via JDBC:

http://216.239.59.104/search?q=cache:NpGpHSo0mqcJ:www.fwnetwork.com/description/openoffice.html+%22open+office%22+jdbc&hl=en&client=firefox-a
(only the cached version of that link contains the reference to JDBC)

Here is a link re connecting from OO to Postgresql:
http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-jdbc/2002-12/msg00115.php

Maybe you can find out in the OO docs about JDBC, and if you have any
problems come back to this list or the Firebird Java list.

Regards,

Bernard
