Some things to check for:

The route the request takes to the server, tracert will give you more
details.
What are the ping times for the server from remote locations (home etc)
Are you using DNS names for server or are you specifying the ip address?
Do you have any firewalls installed?
Are all network cards the same speed?
How busy is the network in general.
When off site are you using a modem/broadband/ISDN/T1 connection to connect.
Are you using wireless network, if so what speed?
What connection do you have from the server to the outside world
(Modem/T1/ISDN etc).
Are you using a proxy?
What is the connection string?
How many simultaneous connections do you have to the database at any one
time?

If you are using DNS instead of an IP address then don't forget that there
will be a delay whilst the ip address lookup takes place. If you are using
Windows then add the ip to the hosts file, this will speed things up for
you.
