The first alpha turned up a couple of ugly problems, now fixed. After
the next alpha, which is now frozen and in the hands of the kit
builders, there will be at least a third alpha, which integrates a lot
of internationalization work. If those all work reasonably well, the
first beta will follow.

The (relatively) good news is that we seem to have learned from 1.5 that
adding features to the code after alpha slows down the release.
