IMHO - rich text is for the wrapper application, not the DBMS.
Relational DBMS' are not the same sort of beast as an free-form text
such as Lucene or Ask-Sam, and each has its complementary strengths and
weaknesses. Lotus Domino is built on top of something like Ask-Sam, but
it is being displaced over time by an RDBMS installation (DB2).
The Vulcan project is supposed to include an expanded text search
engine, but I don't know its status. Since Vulcan is still far from
release I am not sure about how much you can plan on its capabilities.
If you choose to use a relational model, your application will be
architected very differently than if you use a free-form text engine.
In particular, the rich text formatting will be limited to the user
interface layer, and will be separated from the search data.
