Dennis:

I'll check the connection strings again, but really, if the ODBC
connection works when no-one else is logged into the database and
doesn't work when someone else is already logged in, can it really be
a problem with the connection string? I would understand if there were
some switch in the string indicating whether the connection should
create and exclusive lock or something like that, but that's not the
case here.
