thank you, Rob Martin! I had a major problem with Firebird, when I
moved (physically) a machine from a local network over to a network
which is on a switch with machines that are outside of our firewall.

Your question led to me to looking in the right place -- moving the
machine back inside the network magically got rid of the
puzzling 'unavailable database' error, and everything went back to
working.

We are running windows server 2003, with the latest security
upgrades. I don't want to THINK about using this with XP.
