We have a similar installation here.
There is a "main" installation, a samba share (hosting the exe and
client library etc.) on a linux server with a full firebird server and
database. The samba share also hosts a windows batch that installs the
application (now based on an embedded server) to a local directory
(usually a notebook). When starting the application on the notebook the
user gets the choice to connect to the local copy or to the server.
There are means to import changes made locally to the server and to
update the local application and database to the server version (also
batch files located on a samba share on our linux servers).
