There have been no changes to the database structure in the past few weeks,
so I can't imagine that causing the problem.
I will probably leave your suggestion as a last resort, mostly because of
the amount of time it would take and I would also assume that the normal
backup & restore would do the same kind of thing.

Have you made changes to the structure of the db or etc? A backup
restore should resolve. I seem to recall when I was first messing with
FB, doing something with tables that was similar. Would almost freeze
the engine, don't think it crashed, but maxed out CPU and etc.
If possible. You might want to recreate the structure of the db, via
meta data and etc. Then pump the contents into the new empty db. Time
intensive, but if you have tried everything else, might be worth while.
Although I assume that's what a backup does? Restores structure, then
pumps, populates data in steps?
