because it doesn't know how to handle the other columns, if you use a group
by clause any selected column must either be in the group by as well or be a
function like sum(column-name).

This would work (assuming rainfall is a numeric column)


Select Rainfallzone, sum(rainfall) from Rainfall
Group by Rainfallzone
