Don't worry about actual DB implementation, except to know how it might
impact you negatively. Code to best practices and standards.

Is your data confined to a certain precision? If so use Numeric as it
is not allowed to have a greater precision that its definition. If your
data can have a greater precision, then use Decimal. It's precision is
allowed to grow to whatever the underlying implementation is.

On Firebird, you'll have to constrain the Numeric yourself by adding a
CHECK constraint.
