We are also using 1.52 Classic under Windows, and have experienced
similar problems. I'm very keen to learn what's happening.

One thing I can contribute, though: sometimes we've found that it is
*possible* to connect to the database, but just very slow. Sometimes,
for example, IBExpert's "Test Connection" tool *appears* to hang, but if
you're patient enough and leave it alone it does succeed after 3-5 mins.
To get an accurate picture of the problem, we had to test very
carefully.
