I have misread your message.

I think if you are getting undefined service gds_db/tcp, you have a old
gds32 library in your system.

Besides you said that this machine have never had a IB installed... take
a look at your system (or system32) dir and look for what version is
gds32.dll

firebird client library does not need an entry on the services file, it
assumes port 3050
