Hi
For some reason I had convinced myself that I had produced a backup file that could be
read as a normal database, this was obviously not the case and I can't really see why I
thought so, probably a senior moment !.
When I played around with gbak one of the things that threw me was that the original
database was over 3MB but when backed up it reduced to about 67K, I convinced
myself that this couldn't be a full backup until I played around with restoring.
Thanks to some help from Helen I now produce a backup using the IBX
IBBackupService component and restore withIBRestoreservice producing a database
of around 800K, although gbak did work also.
My customer who requested this now backs up both the normal backup file and the
restored backup database on their network nightly.
I did also look at using a shadow copy of the database as a backup but I was worried
about what would happen if for some reason the database server did not have access
to the shadow file, for instance during nightly backups.
so thanks Aage and Helen for the help / advice.
