Actually, it turns out that MS decided to use this extension for some of
its own system/internal files (registry or such).

I saw this one day when running disk defrag, the defrag showed the name
of the file it was working on... it had the extension ".gdb"

When I tried to find the file using standard tools, nothing came up.

So the file must be 'protected' -- thus the reason that the extension is
covered by the system restore feature.
